The Texas Forts Trail encompasses over 650 miles of over 70 cities and over 55 historic sites. The most concentrated area of these locations however is on the Bankhead Highway portion of the Forts Trail region.

Travelers can follow the trail by beginning in Mineral Wells and traveling along the historic Bankhead Highway traveling through towns like Palo Pinto, Strawn, Ranger, Eastland, Cisco, Baird, Abilene, and Sweetwater.

There are 10 trails in Texas, each one focusing on a different aspect of Texas heritage, history and culture. Together they form the Heritage Trails Group of Texas, which has launched a quarterly magazine to celebrate Texas. These magazines are available for free from more than 100 visitor centers, heritage sites, and select businesses throughout Texas.
